Glorious end to a fine regatta...
With 15 knots of breeze the twenty odd mile passage race from Batam, Indonesia to Changi Sailing Club in Singapore was completed in record time despite over ten miles of slogging to windward. The bigger boats had a chance to stretch there legs on the reaching legs that made up the rest of the race. Finishing early had the added advantage of being able to complete CIQ formalities and reorganize the race boats for there onward voyage to the Philippines for the Boracay Race and Presidents Cup next month.

In the Racing Class Neil Pryde's Welbourne 52 Hi Fi capped of a brilliant regatta with another win, thereby keeping a clean score sheet with seven wins out of seven races. After plugging away all regatta Fred Kinmonth / Nick Burns Farr-Mills 51 Fortis Mandrake finally jumped up into second place today which will no doubt please the crew after all there hard work. Third place for Ray Roberts DK46 Quantum Racing has them holding onto second overall but wondering what they have to do to beat a revitalized Hi Fi at the rest of the Asian regattas. Fourth place for Bill Bremner / Andy Cocks TP52 Foxy Lady IV earns them third overall and the crew have gained valuable experience on racing a TP52 in medium to strong winds. Fred Kinmonth / Nick Burns Fortis Mandrake take out fourth overall and Sarab Jeet Singh's Sydney 40 Windsikher in fifth overall are on a steep learning curve.

Neil Pryde and Hi Fi have also won the Sir Thomas Lipton Perpetual Trophy which is a cumulative pointscore over the Raja Muda Regatta, King's Cup and Singapore Straits Regatta each season.

Amazingly in Class B Borstnar Vladimir's J24 Angel has eclipsed everyone in fine style. Despite having cracked sheets all the way from Batam on one tack which should favour the bigger boats, it is Borstnar's J24 that won the day and the regatta with five wins out of seven races. Second place for Kenn Eyears Nelson 10m Waka Tere is a return to form and they hold onto third overall. Regatta Chairman Bob Ashman's Dehler 39 Simba made the most of the waterline length to claim third spot today but finishes down in eighth overall. Richard Ahl / Tim Tan's J24 Juno slipped a little to fifth place today but has done well in earlier races to hold onto second place overall.

In the up and down PY Class, Leslie Fung's husband and wife team onboard there Hanse 315 Todak 2 have consistently scored podium places throughout the regatta and today's win firmly plants them on the top of the podium. Second place for Hellmut Schutte's First 45 Aquavit 5 completes there comeback trail to secure second overall after earlier disappointments. Third place for John Ramsden / Sharon Fe's Elan 434 Sofa So Good breaks the overnight tie and earns them third overall. Guz Wilkinson / Chris Furness Elan 410 Rikki Tikki Tavi ends up in fourth overall and a very happy crew after a close tussle on there first outing. Jerome Lau's Bravia 37 WYSIWYG II must be commended for there mighty act of seamanship and picking up a stranded windsurfer then returning him safely to shore during the race from Singapore to Batam earlier in the week.

Summary
Well, we have had it all this week. Beginning with the marina party at the Volvo village then being involved with the glamorous Volvo Ocean Race restart, followed by the arrival of the Indonesian President and grand opening of the newly renovated Nongsa Point Marina. To cap it all off there has consistently been 15 to 20 knots of wind for the sailors to enjoy which has made the 15th running of the regatta another success story. Returning the event to Indonesia after two years break has all the makings of past glorious years and the new facilities are second to none. Some doubt exists about future SS regattas in the present economic climate but with some concentrated effort by the sailing enthusiasts in Singapore should see the event hopefully continue into the future.
