AsianYachting - Race Report 3 and Summary
by Capt Marty Rijkuris
3rd Nov 2002

The ever changing wind direction and scattered storms once again played havoc with the race officers who worked overtime laying and relaying the course for three hours before conditions settled enough to get the final days racing started. A two knot current sweeping across the start line had the competitors sailing away from the line or holding station before turning back as the starting signal sounded.

By the end of the day, 2 races were completed which produced a mixed bag of very close results and saw numerous fluctuations on the leader board. Peter Ahern's Yo! added 2 further second places to his consistent tally to leap frog Ray Roberts on Luna Nuova the overnight leader who could only manage a 4th and 6th today to take overall 1st and 2nd places respectively. Hannes Waimer's Malaysian Farr 40 Jativa added another win to their tally in race 5 elevating them to 3rd place overall and relegate Keith Moore's Pla Loma and Bill Bremner's well sailed Foxy Lady to 4th and 5th.

Schle Wood's Thai racing team on Pasaya bounced back to win race 6 to show that they are capable of performing and will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming regatta's on the Asian Yachting Circuit this year. Frank Pong's 77ft Jelik took line honours in both races held today but with a enormous IRC of 1.443 had to be content with 8th place overall.

Division B for the smaller racers was convincingly won by Bill Bremner's Foxy Lady scoring 5 x 1st places from Stuart Harrison's new Mumm 30 Panic. Malaysia's Dato Dr Razif's 26 year old Piccolo had a solid outing to secure third place in this class and benefited by improving their crew work through out the series.

Once again the Asean Regatta 2002 has been judged a resounding success by attracting top level racing yachts and sailing competition to the region. The Aussie teams may have won this time out but the close results show that the Singapore and Malaysian teams are not far behind so watch out when these yachts meet again.

AsianYachting - Race Report 2
by Capt Marty Rijkuris
2nd Nov 2002

Judging by the starting line action at today's rescheduled races all the skippers and crew where keen to get racing. Three yachts Foxy Lady, Pasaya and Jativa where recalled by Aussie race officer Chris Kelly for being over the start line or on the course side when he sounded the starting signal. The committee's decision to cancel the passage race in favour of completing a few more windward/leeward's saw the yachts lining up in similar shifty conditions experienced yesterday.

Ray Roberts on Luna Nuova had a close tussle with Peter Ahern's Yo! around the course to eventually share the honours with Yo! taking line honours to bump the Aussie teams to the top positions of the leader board. Keith Moore's Pla Loma bounced back with a third place and Bill Bremner (4th) whose gallant efforts so far on Foxy Lady has earned the Singaporean team overall third place. After putting in one of their best performances to date Schle Wood's Thai team on Pasaya where awarded maximum points for not responding to the starters recall which places them well down the list after dismal results in the earlier races.

In a similar fashion to yesterday the afternoon tropical thunderstorm struck early today with 30 knot squalls reducing visibility as the smaller class B yachts struggled to finish race 4. Any further hope of racing was abandoned for the day as the yachts returned to their berths in Admiral Marina and the race committee plan to complete the series with at least 2 of the 3 scheduled races tomorrow on the final day of competition.

AsianYachting - Race Report 1
by Capt Marty Rijkuris
1st Nov 2002

After a 2 hour delay in proceedings due to little wind, mother nature then built up a pleasant 12 to 15 knot south westerly before finally unleashing a 35 knot plus tropical monsoon thunder storm to finish with. Despite the postponement and varied conditions all 3 scheduled races were completed and Aussie race officer Chris Kelly showed some remarkable perseverance to produce one of the most interesting days racing ever experienced in Port Dickson.

Replacing the keel on Luna Nuova has paid dividends for Aussie Ray Roberts on his first outing to take line and handicap honours in Race 1 by only 10 seconds from Bill Bremner's fast finishing Singaporean team on Foxy Lady. Keith Moore's Farr 40 Pla Loma slotted into third and as only 2 minutes separated the first six yachts on corrected time indicating how close the racing is expected to become.

Peter Ahern's Yo! regained their composure after a unlucky race 1 and struck back to record a 1st in race 2 from Ray Roberts on Luna Nuova and Foxy Lady taking 3rd. This time only 8 minutes of corrected time (after handicaps have been applied) separated the 10 boat fleet which range from a 77 footer down to 30ft.

The sailors welcomed the freshening breeze and decided to continue on with Race 3 despite a building storm over land. Hannes Waimer's crew on Jativa displayed some of last years form and take 1st place for the Malaysian team over Yo! and Frank Pong's 77ft sled Jelik slid into 3rd place and took line honours for race 2 and 3. The smaller class B yachts struggled over the last half mile to the finish as the storm unleashed it's full fury.

AsianYachting - Preliminary Roundup
30 Oct 2002

Admiral Marina manager Greg Yap in Pt Dickson reports that the adjacent Malacca Straits is experiencing an increased level of yachting activity as the Asean Regatta 2002 draws nearer and the annual migration of cruising yachts through South East Asia is in full swing. The Thai and Singaporean Farr 40's Pasaya (Schle Wood) and Pla Loma (Keith Moore) arrived early and have been out practicing starting manoeuvres and racing tactics. Ten of the fastest racing yachts in Asia and some of the best sailing teams that Australia, Singapore and Thailand can muster will take on the Malaysian boats for 3 days (31st Oct - 3rd Nov) of concentrated yacht racing.

South East Asian leaders have committed to developing a vibrant marine tourism sector by encouraging the recent growth in marine facilities and boating services along the coastal communities. This in turn has attracted foreign investment, modern boat building techniques and repair facilities that puts them well on the way to gaining International recognition and establish a yachting Industry in the region. The Asean Regatta was born as a direct result of this expansionist policy. Hannes Waimer's DK Yachts the builder of the Mumm 30, Farr 40, 52 and the soon to be released 36 together with regatta chairman Peter Ahern and some of his YO! Racing Team members decided that whilst they are based in Malaysia to stage a first class yacht racing event designed to meet the demands of top level keel boat sailors in South East Asia.

Results normally speak for themselves. Usually the competitors and winners at the Asean Regatta have inevitably gone on to claim podium finishes in the racing and cruising classes during the upcoming regatta season. Regular on the Asian Yachting Circuit Aussie Ray Roberts hopes to gain some extra boatspeed by yet again replacing the keel on Luna Nuova and Hannes Waimer's DK Yachts racing team this time on a Farr 40 Jativa hope to defend the title they so narrowly won (Go to Asean 2001) from Peter Ahern's fast finishing Murray Burns Dovell 50 Yo!

A interesting tussle is expected between the four class B yachts with a IRC rating less than 1.100. Where Stuart Harrison's new Mumm 30 Panic will be taking on Bill Bremner's Foxy Lady a BH / Sydney 36 which won the inaugural regatta as Keith Moore's Pla Loma (Go to Asean 2000) and Steve Walker's X99 Next Page adding strength to the Singaporean contingent. Dato Dr Razif has acquired Piccolo a sentimental favourite that won the storm swept Sydney Hobart Race back in 1976 and taking this opportunity to train a local sailing team that hope to repeat John Lightfoot's cruising class B victory during last years RMIR. Having the lowest IRC handicap at 0.982 she is still capable of pulling out a few surprises over her newer and bigger rivals.

Late News: Frank Pongs Wylie 77 ULDB sled Jelic has just arrived after taking the daily double victory in the Hong Kong to Hainan Race (See ChinaCRW02) is considering entering the Asean Regatta as the sole representative from Hong Kong.

Whatever the final results maybe competitors can expect to sail in warm weather, warm water, experience warm hospitality and some great race management in an exotic part of the world - So if your passing through Port Dickson this Deepavali long weekend do drop in - Yacht Racing doesn't get much better than this.

All media are advised that this page will be regularly updated with the daily emailed Race Reports and photo's during the regatta. Please feel free to use all or part of the above report in any other publications.
