sees the return of the biennial HK to Vietnam Race. The yachts usually
experience lengthy downwind reaching conditions and as they sail deeper
into the South China Sea can expect rolling seas to propel them on their
way. Usually off-limits to recreational sailors both Hainan Island and Vietnam are great jumping-off points for HK boats intending to continue onto other seasonal sailing events in, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. 24th to 27th October - China Cup International Regatta After the success of inaugural China Cup International Regatta last year it will be once again be held in Daya Bay off Shenzhen. The Longcheer Yacht Club are the hosting venue and an extravaganza of social and cultural events are held during the event. The regatta kicks off with a passage race from Hong Kong to Shenzhen starting on the 24th and followed by three days of inshore racing in and around the territorial waters in Shenzhen Daya Bay. A further 20 Beneteau First 40.7's are being added to the original 10 that will compete as a One Design Class within the regatta and will be made available to International racing teams to participate in the China Cup. ![]() Nov 1st Singapore restart - SailAsia Rally The rally started in Darwin during July as Sail Indonesia with over 90 entrants. SailAsia will be taking over from Raffles Marina, Singapore on the 3rd November ending in Langkawi for an exciting week from 24 to 29 Nov (see the Rally Schedule). |

After three successful events the World
Match Racing Tour will have the final round of the 2008
Tour Season in Terengganu, Malaysia. With the help of Aussie champion
Dato' Peter Gilmour the Monsoon Cup
has a MR 1,000,000 (approx US$275,000) prize pool. Sailed in Foundation
36's, designed by New Zealander Brett Bakewell-White this project is inline
with the Malaysian PM's plan to develop the East coast for yachting and
marine tourism activities. The prevailing NE Monsoon winds will be an
attraction and the event is expected to become Malaysia's yachting equivalent

***** Jan 17th to 21st - 15th Singapore Straits Regatta Held in a late January time slot as the NE Monsoon winds are expected to set in and produce excellent sailing conditions. This year the Changi Yacht Club plays host by returning to the traditional series format of windward/leeward and passage races to be held both in Singaporean and Indonesian waters. This event also marks the conclusion of the three nations S.E.A. Perpetual Cup Series where the winner is awarded the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. Jan -- & -- Feb -- - Horsburgh Challenge - Singapore Held over two weekends the Horsburgh Challenge is the SAF Yacht Club’s signature keelboat event that is held at the height of the blustery north-east monsoon season. The first race will be a 54-nautical mile passage race from the SAF Yacht Club’s Changi Clubhouse to the Horsburgh Lighthouse – situated on the Eastern entrance of the Singapore Straits – and back. The second race is a 16-nautical mile race off the East Coast Park, a popular weekend recreational area. There will be two divisions – the IRC and Club Handicap classes. The San Fernando Race is organised by RHKYC on alternate years, and is a shorter race to San Fernando in the La Union province of the Philippines, billed as "Fun in the Sun". The race is 480nm, rated Category 1 Offshore and will next take place in 2009. May 1st to 5th - 5th Top of The Gulf Regatta & Coronation Cup For keelboats, large multi's, beach cats and dinghy classes held on the first week of May at Ocean Marina, near Pattaya in the Gulf of Thailand. It incorporates the prestigious Platu 25 Coronation Cup and timed to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej of Thailand. Bill Gasson, chairman of the organizing committee, added that boats are available for charter and “It’s hard to find a better location, good wind, a great sailing area just out the front door of the marina". July start - Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally Fifteen yachts made up the fleet in 2008 on the second year the race has been restarted. The popular Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race & Rally starts in July, so get in early as entries close in June. The 600 mile race to the capital of the famous spice islands is destined again to be one of the World's classic blue water events. Numbers reached 100 before the race was suspended in 1999. Entry fee covers C.A.I.T cruising permit and Ambon clearance charges. After Ambon a committee member will escort interested yachts to Makassar via Manado etc a distance of over 1200 miles. Regatta The RSYC Regatta is fast becoming Singapore's largest and premier keelboat event. A record number of yachts took part last year and attracted the cream of Singapore’s keelboat racing community with an exciting line-up of sport boats, racing and cruising yachts. This is one regatta which attracts all comers, ranging from solo sailors to the serious racers and leisure cruisers. Aug 17th to 26th - The SANDEQ RACE Is the world's fastest, longest and hardest race for traditional fishing vessels and one of Indonesia's best nautical events of the year! The annual race for traditional sandeq outrigger sailing boats starts in Mamuju and ends in Makassar. August --th, --th & --th - 12th SMU/RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta The WCSR is recognized as one of Singapore's premier regattas that takes place in Western Singapore waters. This year co-organised by Raffles Marina and Singapore Management University. Taking advantage of the solid breezes of the SW monsoon, the regatta takes place over three weekends: Sun 17th, Sun 24th, and Saturday 30th. There will be a special Benificial Race and Raffles Anniversary Carnival on Sun 31 August. The 2008 edition features four divisions: IRC A & B, PY, One Design (J-24) and F16 catamarans. A new SMU Cup will be awarded to the winner of Day 2 passage race. The Western Circuit has gained the enviable reputation as being one of the most popular regattas, were both Singaporean and regionally based keel boats can join together in a competitive and friendly atmosphere.
