1. EDITORIAL

Last month Phuket Race Week got the 2007-08 Season underway in grand style. This month, crews get an opportunity to improve their skills at club run events before the big regattas start in November. In Singapore the RSYC Regatta enters the second weekend and the 10th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta co-organised by Raffles Marina and Singapore Management University runs over three weekends from 12th, 19th & 25th. Small keelboat racing is experiencing a revival with J24's in Singapore and Platu 25's holding one-design championships in Thailand and the RSYC in Malaysia holding the Selangor Gapurna International Youth Match Racing Regatta with the longest name from 23rd to 26th August. Believed to be the first of its kind in Malaysia (and perhaps South East Asia) 12 teams of international standard youth sailors will be competing on the testing waters of the Klang Estuary.

Meanwhile over 130 yachts have started in Darwin, Australia on Sail Indonesia and now happily anchored in Kupang, West Timor. This is the first stop on a three month rally that sees them being entertained at many off the beaten tourist path destinations, across the 15,000 islands that form the Indonesian archipelago.Helsal II and Australian Maid where the only racing boats entered and staged a classic battle across the Arafura Sea with Helsal II finishing 4hrs 40mins in front of the smaller Aussie Maid. By the end of October we can expect an influx of these yachts into Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand marinas before they proceed on their round the world voyages. This rally is proving very popular, so yachts interested in participating next year are advised to contact the organisers soon, as they have received over 60 entries already and they deal on a first come first served basis. Browse the incredible schedule of events at: http://www.sailindonesia.net/indonesia/schedule.php

One of the most interesting events held each year in Indonesia is the Sandeq Race (17-26th Aug). Billed as the world's fastest, longest and hardest race for traditional fishing vessels, the flimsy looking Sandeq outrigger sailing boats start off in Majene, Sulawesi and end up 10 days latter in the capital city of Makassar. Foreigners are welcome to attend as each city visited during this open sea race, throws a local festival with dancing, music and local foods not to be missed. These spectacular sailing craft only came to the notice of the broader public recently and winning the race is a year long dream of many a sandeq sailor. More at: http://songlinecruises.com/sandeq

2. TEAM NEWS

2.1 Thai sailors going for Gold
Two Farr Platu crews will make a fully sponsored attempt on the Platu 25 World Championships 2007 in Germany during August. They will use the Thai Nationals and the Worlds as lead up events to the SEA Games to be held off Ocean Marina, Pattaya in December. Local Aussie sailor Scott Duncanson, better known in Phuket as owner and skipper of Somtam Express, which won Phuket Raceweek last month, has compiled a crew to defend the Thai National Platu Title in Pattaya from Aug 13 - 14.
An all Thai crew on Naiad crew are using the National Titles as a springboard for the Platu Worlds in Neustadt, Germany, from Aug 24 to 31. “We have been acting as ‘tuning partner’ for them for most of this year. They have been training six days a week for the past two months and have a professional Kiwi coach in John Weston,” Duncanson explained. “They have improved immensely and have beaten us in the past two Ocean Marina mini-regattas in Pattaya." 2.2 Volvo Ocean Race news
The 2008-09 VOR is going to Qingdao but the door is still open for another China stopover. Pressure is building for Hong Kong to step up to the plate and if they want to become Asia's worldly city they need to bring major events like this to town. The big question still remaining is will Singapore or Malaysia sign up for the SE Asian stopover after the yachts make their way across the Indian Ocean from Kochi, India. Nothing has been heard for a long time. The often touted US$20m price tag is allot cheaper than the America's Cup and will actually take place in the country willing to come up with the goods. Legs 3 to 7 from the Middle East to India through SE Asia to China are scheduled from December to February, straight into the North West Monsoon season. Teams have expressed difficulties in finding wind and wave data for these legs. Depending on the strength of the NW trade winds, crews can expect to go upwind in 25+ knots of wind in big sloppy seas stirred up by strong cross currents. The boats can go at 15 knots in these conditions and as jumping off waves is extremely hard on the boats and crew,.if boats are expected to break in the next race, it will be on these legs. More on the six confirmed entries at: http://www.volvooceanrace.org/teamnews/

2.3 Battle of the billionaires egos...
Less than a month since Ernesto Bertarelli's Alinghi Team won the 32nd America's Cup, two billionaires have got themselves into a real mud slinging match to control the rules in their own self-interest and a battle of their big egos. First blow came when the newly formed Club Nautico Espanol de Vela was appointed the Challenger of Record and agreed on Protocol for the 33rd America's Cup drawn up by Ernesto's Defending Yacht Club, the Societe Nautique de Geneve (SNG). SNG appointed ACM to manage, organise and finance the 33rd America's Cup. ACM is also charged with appointing a Race and Measurement Committee along with a Chief Umpire. ACM will establish a Competitors' Commission with representation from both the Defender and Challengers. As the protocol was extremely biased towards favouring the defender a group of challengers voiced their displeasure. Larry Ellison's home club, the Golden Gate Yacht Club, then took up the cause on behalf of the Challengers against the Defenders controversial Protocol and lodged a formal challenge and since filed a lawsuit against defenders SNG in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, which has jurisdiction over the America's Cup Deed of Gift. The GGYC challenge lost all credibility when the yacht design parameters to be a 90 x 90 x 20 multihull was deemed to be an equally contrived challenge. Upon announcing that the venue would again be Valencia and the challengers would have input into the rule for the proposed 90-foot monohull class for AC33, four teams have signed up with the devil they know. Bertarelli declared his intentions over the possible court case in New York "I'm going to defend this case with every ounce of breath in my body". Expect more fireworks over the next few months. 2.4 First concept design for new 90 ft AC yachts
Schickler Tagliapietra has begun preliminary design for the new IACC 90 foot race yachts. The goal of this work is to position the design office out in front of this class, ready to make valuable performance gains in the short design cycle available. It also lays the groundwork for CFD analyses, but because the final details of the class remain under debate, a number of key research areas have been anticipated. Utilizing parametric modeling techniques, the preliminary design can be prepared and updated as more information becomes available. 2.5 Sunsail Asia opening up new destinations...

Nha Trang, Vietnam opened in May with an increased the fleet size. A new base is planned for Koh Chang in the Gulf of Thailand. They now operate over 30 yachts with monohulls ranging from 33' - 50' and Catamarans from 39' to 41'. All yachts are available bareboat or as crewed yachts on a daily, weekly or long term basis. 3. AUSTRAL - ASIAN NEWS

3.1 OPTI WORLDS
A new record entry of 256 sailors from 56 countries are contesting the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) World Championship hosted by the Y.C. Cagliari in Sardinia, Italy. Up to five sailors are representing each country. On Day four of the fleet racing the wind averaged 24 knots, rising to an officially recorded 32 knots at one stage. Benjamin Grez of Chile with 2/9 edged into a 5 point lead over Chris Steele (NZL) who had 8/13. James Anfossi (BER) lead the chasing pack followed by Sacha Pelisson (FRA). Best performing Asian sailors are Malaysia's Mohd Nazrin Muis from Selangor that has slipped back to 12th place and Singaporean girl Rachel Lee in 27th. While the hot-shots reveled in the fresh conditions, at the other end of the fleet there were relatively few who were unable to cope -- http://www.optiworld.org/ioda-news.html

3.3 Warning to all offshore racers.
DK Yachts are warning all offshore racers to sit up and take notice when one of their World Champion Mumm 30, Farr 40 or Mills DK46 lines up on the starting grid. They just keep turning up and sailing away with all the major prizes. Despite being becalmed for a whole day Tom Ebert, Skipper and owner of the DK46 Tutima completed the HSH Nordbank blue race from Newport, Rhode Island, to Hamburg, Germany, after a 20d, 8h, 42m and 7s across the North Atlantic. "With a top speed of 21 knots we arrived first of our group and corrected out third in 2b IRC class, that is okay”. A batten pocket, two battens and a bruised finger are the only damages on the 14 meter (46 feet) long yacht. Now, the crew are taking Tutima to start the next long-distance race “Rund Bornholm”. Monday July 30, Thomas Colville will leave Bali on his 105ft Sodeb’O for a 3700 mile crossing to the Seychelles. If the south east trade winds are stable, he will attempt to establish a new record for the crossing and has not ruled out the possibility of going for the solo 24 hour record. 4.4 First Vertical Circumnavigation via Russia’s northern Polar route
Alpha Global Expedition: Adrian Flanagan sails where no solo yachtsman has ever been before. His yacht Barrabas has departed on the Russian route no single-handed yachtsman has ever been given permission to sail before. Setting sail from Provideniya on Monday 23rd July at 1100am local time after a brief but hugely reassuring visit to clear Russian customs and gain the final permit to travel Russia’s northern Polar route. The weather was clear and fine as a high pressure system continues to sit over the Bering Strait. This stretch of water can be dangerous with fast currents running in both directions between the Chukchi Sea in the north and the Bering Sea to the south. He owes a great many people a huge debt, especially Louise and John Mann in Moscow plus Roman Abramovich, governor of Chukotka for working so hard to secure permission from The Russian Administration to allow him to attempt this unique voyage. Success in life is never guaranteed, but one thing is assured - Barrabas and I will give this everything we have. Follow the expedition at http://www.alphaglobalex.com

4.5 Record number of teams in Archipelago Raid 2007
The Archipelago Raid 2007 started on Monday 30th July from Bjorno, Sweden in the unique and spectacular Scandinavian Archipelago. More than 58 world-class competitors in a record 29 teams are preparing for this extraordinary quest through beauty on F18 open catamarans. The Raid pushes teams to the edge both mentally and physically as they navigate round the 100,000 islands that make up the Swedish, Aland and Finnish Archipelagos. The teams battle through uncharted rocks and changing weather conditions for 5 days stopping only for a brief 'overnight' rest when the sun goes down in a region which sees very little night time in the high summer. This year's event has attracted sailors from 10 countries including teams from as far a field as Australia and New Zealand alongside local crews from Sweden and Finland. There are 17 teams returning to the event from previous editions but this year there will also be an additional 12 teams competing in this unique event for the first time. Follow their progress at: http://www.archipelagoraid.com

Six of the skippers have been involved in the 32nd America's Cup, so there is no doubt that this will be a very exiting event to follow. Apart from earning valuable points for the World Match Racing Tour ranking the sailors will also compete for the $60,000 prize purse. The final event of World Match Racing Tour will be the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia where the official ISAF Match Race World Champion will be crowned. 5. WORLD SPEED RECORDS

5.1 Wow a whooping 796 nm in 24 hours
(July 22, 2007) French sailor Franck Cammas claimed a new world speed record after logging 794 miles in 24 hours from 19th to the 20th July on his 105ft trimaran Groupama 3 during an attempt at the transatlantic record - and then improved it with an amazing 795.2-mile run. That's an incredible average speed of 33.08 knots. Now officially ratified by WSSRC, it's much more than a small improvement: it will shatter Bruno Peyron's 2006 record of 766.8 miles on the maxi catamaran Orange 2. One of the refinements that has allowed the team behind Groupama 3 to push sailing to within a hair of the 800-mile day is curved daggerboards designed to reduce drag and generate lift. They have long been a feature in the super-powerful ORMA 60 trimaran class from which Cammas hails.

5.2 The ATLANTIC in less than a HUNDRED HOURS...
Franck CAMMAS and his nine crew have smashed the Atlantic crossing record in a time of 4d 03 hrs 57 mins 54 secs (Ratified by WSSRC), at an average speed of 29.26 knots over the 2,925 mile course. Groupama 3 crossed the finish line off Lizard Point on Tuesday at 00 hrs 00 mins 49 secs (French time), improving on Bruno PEYRON'S time of (4d 08hr 23' 54'') by 4 hours 26 minutes. Groupama 3 has maintained an incredible average of over 29.26 knots for over four days... An unimaginable level just ten years ago, since it is greater than the ocean liners, which still cross the Atlantic today. Website: http://www.cammas-groupama.com

5.3 Roxy enters the record books
The World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSR) announces ratification of a new World Record by Samantha Davies (GBR) and here 4-person crew onboard Roxy, setting a new standard for going around Britain and Ireland non-stop by women. The new time is 10 days 16 hours and 7 seconds, and was set during the 2007 Calais Round Britain and Ireland Race. The previous record of 11d 6h 58m 17s was set in August 2000, and was held by Merron/ Richards onboard Pindar. -- http://www.sailspeedrecords.com

6. "Unluckiest sailors of the month"

6.1 Bounding along and then...
The brand-new Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed IRC 55 Bounder which was built by Goetz Custom Boats in Bristol, Newport Rhode Island lost her keel and capsized on Saturday 30th June while sea-trialing off St Catherine's Point in 18-20kts of breeze. This new, sleek-looking racing machine was shipped across the Atlantic earlier this year and launched at the end of March in Portsmouth, UK commencing sea trials in preparation for the Rolex Fastnet Race. According to Jeremy Robinson who was at the helm, the crew feel very lucky indeed that it happened where and when it did. "The boat went over so quick I didn't even have time to put on my lifejacket. It was all pretty scary stuff." The boat started to heel excessively over a wave. I called for the main to be let out, then there was a huge bang and someone said 'the keel's gone'. "The boat started to capsize immediately, as she went over some of the crew went into the water. I climbed over the top and was able to get hold of the rudder. Once everyone was on the hull we used a mobile and rung 999 and got through to the Coastguards. Fortunately the 14-man crew was successfully lifted to safety about half an hour after the initial call to the coastguards. The worse job we had to do of course, was having to ring the owner Chris Little (Admiral of the RORC) was not on board and tell him what had happed to his new yacht!" The yacht is still afloat and will hopefully, weather permitting, be salvaged as soon as possible. More at: http://www.ybw.com/auto/newsdesk/20070602163021ywnews.html
