1. EDITORIAL

The tragic loss of Hans Horrevoets 32, the Dutch crew member onboard ABN Amro 2, competing in the 2005 - 06 Volvo Ocean Race, brings with it the sobering reality of the dangers each person faces when going to sea and how in a matter of seconds life onboard can turn from a happy scenario into complete turmoil. Since the first Whitbread Race in 1973 there have been four fatalities and with each and every race, yachts are fitted with new equipment and meet stringent safety requirements. By race time the crews for the toughest race in the world have thoroughly researched and carried out man over board safety drills but as professional racers they know the sea can be a dangerous and very unpredictable place where they earn their living.

Even with the best of boat preparations and taking all the safety precautions there is a likelihood that someone may not be coming home as they tear around around the world at breakneck speeds in the roughest of oceans and worst weather conditions nature can throw at them. Skipper Seb Josse and the crew of ABN Amro 2 not only stopped the boat at night under main, fractional spinnaker and staysail in 25 - 30 knots of wind but turned around, motored back over a mile in big dark seas and managed to locate Hans the washed over crew member and bring him back onboard. Unfortunately their attempts to resuscitate him were not successful.

With all the excitement and rewards that sailing brings to us we should always be mindful to the dangers we may face whether sailing across oceans or local harbours and bays plus be alert of the perils that are waiting for us in every step of our lives both at sea and ashore. This is a reminder that, no matter how exciting, exotic or adventurous ocean racing may seem, this can be a very dangerous game. When the sea takes one of our own, we all feel it and all know that many of us are very lucky not to have suffered a similar fate. Sailing Anarchy has created The Hans Horrevoets Memorial Fund. Please make a donation, in memory of Hans for the benefit of his beloved Petra, Bobbi and Bump at: http://www.sailinganarchy.com/donations/hhmf.php

Within a few days the ABN Amro 2 crews outstanding seamanship was called upon again as they diverted course with the body of their Dutch crew-member, Hans Horrevoets still onboard, to come to the aid of the stricken Movistar, transferring all 10 crew over after skipper Bouwe Bekking decided to abandon ship about 300 miles southwest of Land's End.

Important Safety note: The tragedy on ABN Amro 2 again proves the responsibility of all Skippers and crew on pleasure craft to know how to perform a Crash Stop - MOB recovery. UK Halsey Sailmakers have produced a MOB video available on-line at: http://www.ukhalsey.com This is a must see and procedure to be shared with all crews - It could save a life.
Safe and happy sailing were ever you are

2 "Unluckiest sailors of the month"

Gipsy Moth IV, the 53 ft ketch Francis Chichester sailed around the world in, grounded on Rangiroa, a low lying coral reef surrounding the largest of the Toumotu group of atolls while on passage from the Marquesas to Tahiti. Skipper Antonia Nicholson and five crew were taken off and all are safe. 'These deserving, young people had been selected to partake in one of the legs of a two-year voyage sailing around the world.' said David Green, CEO of the UK Sailing Academy.

After spending six anxious days on the reef Richard Baggett, the UKSA leader of the Gipsy Moth IV project and the salvage team led by Captain Kleijwegt of Smit reported "That the operation went without a hitch and within 30 minutes of the tug reaching the scene, Gipsy Moth was gently guided to deep water by a team onboard before being towed safely two hundred miles into Papeete, Tahiti. There was some water ingress but this was easily containable with the diesel powered bilge pump, there is some damage to the rudder and as expected the starboard side has suffered scraping from the rocks". On arrival Gipsy Moth IV was lifted out of the water and the damage assessed by Kiwi surveyor John MacDonald for transshipment to Auckland. With that achieved we are free to focus on getting the boat repaired in New Zealand and getting back on track expecting to depart for Sydney on 23 June. Skipper Antonia Nicholson and First Mate Chris Bruce have since been removed from their positions. ' There can be no denying that this has been a major setback for our project and we will now have to redouble our fundraising efforts if we are to continue with the voyage. Like Sir Francis we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves of and start all over again. To do anything less would be to fail the ‘Chichester Challenge’.

Going down quickly
After a number of self-destructions last year the 60ft trimaran circuit has seen a stark decline in competitors. If that was not enough the weather conditions in the Baie des Anges have been tough, not to say fierce! Friday saw the dismasting of Gitana 12 then Banque Populaire IV capsized on Saturday, while Gitana 11 burst her mainsail battens on Sunday. All in all, it's been a very lively Trophée du Conseil Général des Alpes Maritimes! Multicup series site: http://www.multicup60.eu

3.2 Neil Pryde's Hi-Fi Team Pryde are the 2005- 06 AY Grand Prix Champions
The 2005/06 Season came to a conclusion with the Koh Samui Regatta. After winning the China Coast Regatta, Raja Muda, Singapore Straits and second place at the King's Cup,
Neil Pryde and his Farr 52 Hi-Fi Team Pryde earned enough points to lift the 2005- 06 AY Grand Prix Skipper and Yacht Champions for the second year in succession. Neil was not present to receive this prestigious award but a special presentation and champagne ceremony will be held at a latter date. This did not deter us from sharing the champagne around with the Koh Samui winners at the magnificent prize giving party on the lawns of the Central Samui Resort to celebrate the end of the season. To see how your favourite team has scored through out the season goto: http://asianyachting.com/news/AYGP05-06.htm For those interested in the photo competition the girls on Billy YO! won the vote hands down and we are looking forward to conducting similar votes over the coming season.

3.5 Thailand finally acknowledges Sailboats as vessels
The Marine Department has announced that Thai-registered sailing vessels of 16 meters (52.4 feet) or less no longer need to have a Thai skipper or crew on board when in Thai waters. Vincent Tabuteau, Managing Director of Asia Marine, a member of the Marine Alliance of Thailand (MAT), an informal consortium of marine businesses in Thailand, explained to the Gazette that the new rule also includes a definition of a sailboat, which did not exist previously under Thai marine regulations. 'Before, when applying for commercial licenses sailboats had to be categorized as being for transportation, for cargo or for fishing – but charter sailboats are none of these. Without a proper definition of a sailing boat it was difficult for government officials to regulate the commercial activity of yacht charter' he said. 'The new definition alleviates a major insurance headache for bareboat charters, Mr Tabuteau added.

Meanwhile, at Ao Chalong, the Phuket Marine Office has announced it will enforce regulations designating areas for foreign vessels to moor in an attempt to control marine traffic, prevent criminal activity and reduce damage to reefs. Royal Thai Marine Law dictates that foreign vessels must tie up in Chalong Bay so that officials can check the boat before it sails to other destinations, he said, and all vessels must register at Phuket Pier Controlling Center, also in Chalong. 'Anyone who ignores this order is liable to a fine of between 500 baht and 5,000 baht, or up to three months in jail, or both,' K. Surin stressed. Well sailed Farr 1104's can still pick up and bag the Cruising Class silverware as shown by Rags at the recent Presidents Cup. Was USD 66,000 now reduced to $55k. Between 1965 and 1973 more than 2,000 Chagos islanders were forcibly removed and exiled from their homes in the Indian Ocean paradise isle to make way for the Diego Garcia US airbase have won a High Court victory in London. Lord Justice Hooper and Mr Justice Cresswell ruled that orders made under the royal prerogative to prevent the return of the Chagos islanders to their homes were unlawful. They described as 'repugnant' the action to exile the population of the islands. After the hearing islanders called on the Queen to apologise for what her government had done and said they hoped to return home as soon as possible. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office was given 28 days to appeal. A spokesman said: 'We are disappointed at the judgment.' 3.11 Bullimore takes Doha Asian Games around the world
Round the world yachtsman Tony Bullimore and his 102ft catamaran Daedalus is to carry the flag for the 2006 Asian Games in a series of world sailing record attempts. First an attempt to break the 70 day barrier in a solo non-stop circumnavigation that will start and finish in Hobart, Tasmania, then continue with a series of record chasing voyages between Japan, China, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and India, before returning to Qatar in time for the Asian Games 1st and 15th December. The boat will be named at a public ceremony in Doha and will then embark in June on a shake down record attempt from Qatar to Perth, Australia, before Tony Bullimore hoists sail in July at the start of his solo circumnavigation. The record attempt will be overseen by the World Sailing Speed Record Council which has stipulated a specific course. This takes in Cape Horn, a way-point off Rio de Janeiro, round the island of Fernando do Noronha off the Brazilian coast close to the Equator, then across the Atlantic to a way-point north of Flores in the Azores, before turning south to round Cap Vert, Dakar, the Cape of Good Hope and south of Australia back to Hobart.

Abdulla Khalid Al Qahtani, the Director General of the Doha Asian Games Organizing Committee said that Tony Bullimore and his 102ft catamaran (the much-modified ENZA New Zealand) would not only provide considerable publicity for the Asian Games being staged in Doha between 1st and 15th December, but would carry Qatar's sporting message right around the Asian Continent.

3.13 On the verge of Sailability Timor?
While problems in Dili headline the news of late, Sailability has brought positive news to the East Timoriens with the announcement of plans to establish Sailability Timor. Melbourne sailors Therese Kersten and her partner John Hughan have lived as volunteers in East Timor for two years now and wanted to help local fishermen and the numerous disabled people in the community, many of whom have injuries resulting from mustard gas attacks.

They contacted Sailability’s Jackie Kay in Sydney some time ago and Kay, as always, was enthusiastic. The Access Dinghy Foundation, through its founding director, Chris Mitchell, applied to an impressed AusAid for US$20,000 to get the program up and running. The announcement was made at Sailability’s new Point Piper headquarters at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Rose Bay, which was made possible by famous yachtsman Denis O’Neil and his son Ned, who is President of the new Point Piper outlet. Once funding is in place, Hughan will work as a volunteer full time on the Timor project, with Kersten helping out. Currently, Sailability Timor could do with a kick start to their plans, an aluminium dinghy and outboard motor sail cloth or old sails, ropes and sail thread would be manna from Heaven – new or second hand. They look set to put the first boat in the water on July 1st, pending funding. Should you be able to make a monetary or product donation, please contact: Jackie Kay, Access Dinghy Foundation, email: jackie@accessdinghy.org or phone +61 3 97683101

4.5 VX40's sailing to the max and more
Tues 30th May Portsmouth, United Kingdom: The Volvo Extreme 40's did what they are designed to do - entertain. In 15-25 knots the final race saw two of the teams, overall series leaders Tommy Hilfiger and Volvo Ocean Race, upside down. Tommy Hilfiger helmed by Randy Smyth performed a spectacular cartwheel after they dug the front of the boat in whilst they were leading the race. The boat got to the point of no return and all of the crew members tumbled from the high side, through the air and into the water. In exactly the same spot, just one lap later, Volvo Ocean Race helmed by the class designer Yves Loday mirrored the mistake and although they didn't do a complete cartwheel, they did capsize the boat causing them to forfeit a result from that race. Further info and results log onto http://www.VolvoExtreme40.org

4.6 Will Adrian's Barrabas make it to the Bearing Strait?

A westward passage through the Arctic will lead to the final stage, south-westerly across the North Sea and back into the English Channel. More at: http://www.alphaglobalex.com

5. World Speed Records

5.1 She has done us proud...
Yachtswoman Dee Caffari, 33, has triumphed over extreme isolation, lethal icebergs, mountainous waves, vicious storms and hurricane force winds to set a new world record as the first woman to sail round the world solo, non-stop against the prevailing winds and currents. Caffari's record-breaking 29,100 mile voyage on the 72-foot Aviva lasted 178 days, 3 hrs, 6 mins and 15 secs. She crossed the official finish line in sight of the observer from the World Sailing Speed Record Council off Lizard Point, UK, and completed a passage which ensures her a place in maritime history. "When I crossed the line I was overwhelmed with emotion, it was the proudest moment of my life and becoming the first woman to complete this voyage is a great honour". On a gray stormy day Caffari made her way to Ocean Village in Southampton, UK where HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of The Challenge Business International Limited and Sir Chay Blyth, the first man to complete the voyage in 1971 plus a big crowd of well wishers, welcomed her back to dry land at the end of her marathon journey. http://www.avivachallenge.com

5.2 Yves Parlier finally gets Aquitaine up to speed...
Sailing alone aboard Médiatis Région Aquitaine, Yves Parlier sailed 587.4 miles in 24 hours (subject to ratification of the WSSRC). With an average speed of 24.47 knots, he improved the record by a distance of 47 miles, held since 1994 by Laurent Bourgnon. The team could not hide its emotion. 'We have fought for it (this record) since the beginning of the launch of Médiatis Région Aquitaine. This record rewards the work of all the teams, who have prepared the hydraplaneur since the beginning of the adventure and have mobilised around this Aquitain project'. In the Canaries Islands, Stéphane Hervé, Lalou Roucayrol, Christophe Gouineau, Romaric Neyhousser and Rémi Beauvais stayed up all night to assure safety and control speeds. This record is the first real prize for Parlier since he launched his radical catamaran with its twin rigs, one mounted in each hull and its unusual stepped hulls, a shape taken from sea plane underbellies back in January 2004. More at: http://www.parlier.org

5.3 Asian Records falling by the wayside...
Olivier de Kersauson's trimaran Geronimo, in the colors of Capgemini and Schneider Electric, crossed the finishing line of the 1650 mile new route between Yokohama and Hong Kong setting a record time of 4 days 17 hrs, 47 mins 23 secs. After enduring a few light patches the final time does not, however, represent Geronimo's full potential on this course. But as in all new challenges, one needs a "first" to establish precedent. As these racing opportunities in the Pacific and Asia continue to beckon, Olivier de Kersauson and his team continue to respond. A threatening hurricane approaching Hong Kong caused Olivier de Kersauson to abandon the return leg as a record and left HK early to sail back to Yokohama for an attempt at the Pacific record to San Francisco.
