1. EDITORIAL

After spending an entertaining 10 days in Phuket covering the Quantum Naga Cup and Evason Phuket Race Week (See Unluckiest Sailors Award below) the limelight now turns to Singapore for the 8th Western Circuit at Raffles Marina and a number of club events over the next 2 months before the 2005/06 Season gets fully underway. Regatta organizers are busy coming up with new ideas to improve their event and attract more participation by local sailors and visiting yachts.

At the King's Cup media briefing President Santi Kanchanabandhu for the first time a Thai national stated "That this year the regatta will mark the full recovery of Phuket province and the Andaman Coast from the Tsunami damage suffered last year, as well as demonstrate the growing yachting industry in Thailand". Yacht racing in the South East Asian region has developed from pure sport into a series of annual lifestyle events which attract attention from a much broader audience than ever before.

It always amuses me, when organizers say they would like to emulate the Caribbean, as you only have to look at our own Calendar of Events to realize we overtook them years ago and for those that have never been there, exploring the 30,000 SE Asian Island archipelago has much more to offer.

Regional Tourism Authorities are currently working on a combination of marketing and regulatory measures designed to substantially increase Yachting Tourism and turn South East Asia into a world-class marine tourism destination. Already Phuket has been voted the 4th best retirement destination in the world and catering to these demands will exceed Tourism over the next few years.

AsianYachting is responding by expanding our Shopping Mall to include a Charter Yacht page for the popular "Fly in, have fun, fly out" sailors and a Real-Estate page to promote the ever increasing residential Condominium, Resorts and Marina developments the region has on offer. 2. "Unluckiest sailors of the month" award

Phuket Race Week, surprising enough provided two local award winners this month. The first one came on day 1 when Java based Dutchman Joost Van Der Post bumped the rocks off Ko Bon on his chartered Ava, that cracked the hull and started to uncontrollably take in water. A quick decision was made to beach the vessel on Ko Bon and the sailors taken off safely. Retrieval efforts latter that afternoon only made it worse and the boat has been considered a write off.

The next one came on the windy day 3 when Sue and Michel Arnulphy's spinnaker launch on Cyrene went uncontrollably wrong and within seconds lurched around onto the beam causing the 36ft catamaran to capsize. Quick action taken by the media boats yet again had the slightly battered crew safely onboard and taken to shore, although a little shocked as it all happened so fast.

Fellow multihull sailors stood by to help and the cats designer Mark Pescott and builder Mark Horword instigated a salvage attempt to stabilize the situation in favor of competing any further races on the day. The mast was released and buoyed off while the upturned boat was towed back to the Evason and safely anchored. Righting efforts were to be started immediately after the event and we have been promised a report and images on which of the many suggested salvage methods turn out to be successful.

After passing the Lizard and setting a new record for the solo crossing of the North Atlantic from New York, Francis Joyon swung the bows of his 92-foot trimaran IDEC towards his homeport of La Trinite-sur-Mer. However as he was two thirds of the way home Joyon fell asleep, no doubt exhausted following the intense physical demands and fatigue from his record attempt and clearly overslept, as sometime between midnight and 0100 sailed on to the rocks off the Pointe de Penmarch near Quimper on Brittany's west coast. Joyon was recovered by a RIB attached to the Fire Brigade in Quimper who then took him directly to hospital for a check-up. Joyon was found to be in good shape, unlike his trimaran which was dismasted and smashed to pieces against the rocks.

3.8 CHINESE calm OLYMPIC fears
The senior Chinese official in charge of the sailing venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics has said that fears that the regatta site in Qingdao would be a disaster because of lack of wind are misplaced. Initial reports from Qingdao, a large port city in eastern China about an hour and a half's flying time from Beijing, suggest that the average wind speed during August, when the Games will be held, could be lower than eight knots, making sailing as much a matter of chance as skill. But in an interview with The Times in Valencia, Dong Yong Quan, the commodore of the Qingdao International Yacht Club who was in Spain to help to launch the China Team America's Cup syndicate, said that, while wind conditions are not ideal in his home city, he believes that a fair Olympic regatta can be held there.

3.9 Swedish Match Racing in Malaysia confirmed...
The 7th Swedish Match Tour season commenced with the 2nd annual PTPortugal Match Cup in Cascais, Portugal. It is now confirmed that Malaysia with the help of Aussie champion Peter Gilmour will hold a Swedish Match pro event, the Monsoon Cup in Terengganu from Nov 29 to Dec 4 with MYR 400,000 (approximately US$105,000) prize money. The event will be sailed in Foundation 36s, designed by New Zealander Brett Bakewell-White that were purchased from the Yachting Assoc of Western Australia. This project is inline with the PM's plan to develop Malaysia's East coast for yachting and marine tourism activities. The prevailing NE Monsoon winds will be an attraction and the event is expected to become yachting's equivalent of the Formula 1 GP in Sepang. So keep your eyes on: http://www.swedishmatchtour.com

3.10 Frank Pong joins the TP52 racing scene
Hong Kong's Frank Pong is now venturing into the highly competitive TP52 racing scene by commissioning Argentinean Juan Kouyoumdjian to design him a new TP52. Kouyoumdjian previously designed Pong's radical 115 footer, Maiden Hong Kong says 'doing something different' is now becoming expected of him by his clients. With TP52s you have two types of owner: Some like to buy the standard package and make the difference by having Coutts or Cayard on board and then you have the owners who want the boat itself to make the difference. I usually get contacted by the second group - never the first one! I either have to say to them 'right we play this game like this and these are the risks' or we have to tell them go and get a Farr boat". 3.11 Dare 2 be Different - Charter a winner!
The much talked about tandem mast, bi-plane rig has mainly been used to power up experimental out and out speed machines. But now the Radical Bay 8000 - a production 8m catamaran built right here in South East Asia is available for bare boat or skippered charter around Koh Samui and the surrounding islands.

So now YOU can find out what it is like to sail the Phuket Kings Cup 2004 and Koh Samui winner! Want to own one or see just how easy and safe this radical new design and simple rig handles by going to the Coco Sailing website: http://www.cocosailing.com

3.12 Malaysia Team places 2nd at Optimist Worlds
On a cold, cloudy day at the Optimist Worlds in St Moritz, young Malaysian sailors were piped at the post in the Team Races by the Argentineans to end up with second place in front of the Kiwi's and a host of other national teams.

In the individual rankings Jianan Wu from China did the best of the Asian sailors by placing 3rd overall. Reigning champion Wei NI of China suffered two DSQs and could finish no better than 21st. Asian sailors are now emerging as a force to be reckoned with, as shown by the results at various International events held recently. See below or goto: http://www.optimist.ch

3.13 Singaporean's excel at BYTE World Championships
Riva del Garda, Italy: The Laser Radial Class World Champion, Jean Baptiste Bernaz, is now the Byte Class World Champion for 2005. Second and third places went to two Singapore skippers, Hao Lo Jun and Ming Leong Kwong.

The first Italian was Francis Pagano in tenth place out of the thirty-eight boats competing. The Italian skippers "pay the penance" for the fact that there aren't many Byte boats in Italy, while in other countries, like Singapore or Australia, this hull is now well known and used by many young skippers, thanks to its qualities. 3.14 Singapore and China to the fore at ISAF Worlds
After 73 races on Suyong Bay the 2005 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship came to an end with the closing ceremony in Busan, Korea. In a closely fought Championship all seven gold medals went to different nations, with Singapore winning for the first time ever. Wee Chin TEO and Terence KOH's (SIN) win in the 420 boys event not only gave Singapore their first gold medal, but also Asia their first ever ISAF Youth Worlds gold medal outside the two windsurfer events. After a terrible first two races, TEO and KOH knew they had to produce a string of faultless performances to stand any chance in the event.

However they followed their poor start with a string of four second places, interrupted only by a win in race six to take a narrow one point lead over Japan’s Waturo SAITO and Hiroto YOSHINAGA. TEO said after 'It is consistency which wins regattas and that was what was important for us here. We had a disqualification in the first race and a 15th in the second and then we were just consistent from there. Our lesson from last time - when we were sixth - was never give up.'

In an ominous message to those looking towards Qingdao and the 2008 Olympic Sailing Competition, China picked up their first medal at only their second ever ISAF Youth Worlds and also finished sixth in the Volvo Trophy standings. The conditions experienced on Suyong Bay are expected to be similar to those that will be found in Qingdao making performances in Busan especially noteworthy. 3.16 Open 60's coming to Asia next year
The Open 60 monohull class association, IMOCA, has announced the result of a three-way bidding contest for the rights to run the proposed Europe-China Race departing late March 2006, arriving in China by the end of May. Finally the bid of Extreme Sailing, a company associated to skipper Mike Golding, was awarded the rights to run the 2006 inaugural event, which will see the Open 60's race, short-handed, from London to Shanghai, with possible stopovers in Brittany and Qingdao (site of Olympic sailing in 2008). Over 17,000 miles of hard ocean racing on a completely new track for the Open 60s but one that in maritime history has been a very important trade route, including the famous Tea Clippers of the 19th century. With rapid economic growth in China, a key market for many global brands, this inaugural race to the Far East is a innovative step by the international Open 60 fleet. More at: http://www.imoca.org

4. International News

4.1 La Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro blasts off...
This year La Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro is set to be yet again one of sailing’s main events, receiving 49 sailors at the start in Perros-Guirec, France. From the 1st to the 28th of August 2005, renowned sailors, amateurs and rookies will face the 1,710 nautical miles from Perros-Guirec to Port-Bourgenay passing through Getxo-Bilbao, La Rochelle and Cork (Crosshaven) in Ireland. This 36th edition of the race promises to be very open. There will be a daily press release sent each afternoon, which will also be available by downloading from http://www.lasolitaire.com These will recapture the great moments of the race and offshore news briefs following the daily radio chats and interviews.

4.2 Rolex Fastnet Race - Clash of the Titans from Downunder
The potential for a duel between two of the world's fastest Maxi yachts could see records tumble in this year's Rolex Fastnet Race. It will be a clash of antipodean giants, as Charles St Clair Brown and Bill Buckley's new canting-keeled 100-foot Maximus from New Zealand is expected to take on Grant Wharington's Aussie 98-footer Skandia Wild Thing, when the gun fires in Cowes on Sunday 7th August, of this 608-mile offshore adventure.

They may have their work cut against some Volvo Open 70 teams, Spanish team Telefonica Movistar and Swedish entry Ericsson who are using the race to hone their competitive instincts before setting off around the world this November on the Volvo Ocean Race.

One of the favourites for handicap honours will be Aera, Nick Lykiardopulo's 55-footer skippered by Jez Fanstone. Aera proved her pedigree with a stunning victory in the windy Rolex Sydney Hobart seven months ago, and the team would dearly love to win another 'major' in the Royal Ocean Racing Club's calendar. Further information about the RORC and the Rolex Fastnet Race can be found at: www.rorc.org High resolution digital images and race reports are at: www.regattanews.com

4.3 Drum's crew reunion to raise funds for RNLI
Sir Arnold Clark, the current owner of Drum, has lent the yacht to the boat's former crew to take part in the Rolex Fastnet Race. "Thank you very much for saving our lives" feels inadequate for the crew of Drum and Simon le Bon to say to the men who saved their 24 lives. So, on the twentieth anniversary of the disaster, they've decided to race the yacht that so nearly cost them their lives. At the same time they want to heighten awareness of and raise money for the valuable work of the RNLI and its dedicated team of search and rescue volunteers. Amongst the more notable in the crew were Skip Novak, Bruno Peyron, Roger Nilson, Magnus Olson, Malcolm McKeag, Rick Tomlinson and Chas from Tas, a very well known sailor who entertained many sailors all over the world, over a cold beer by re-enacting the capsizing scene -- http://www.drumreunion.co.uk

4.4 Warning to all offshore racers.
DK Yachts are warning all offshore racers to watch out for when one of their Malaysian built Mum 30, Farr 36, 40, 52, 520 or Mills DK46 lines up on your starting grid. As the European summer unfolds a growing group of DK46's are knocking on the doors of success and standing high on the podium.

Helsinki, Finland: The brand new DK 46 Tutima owned by Frankfurt based clockmaker Tom Ebert won the first leg of the NORD/LB Baltic Sprint Cup after experiencing light and variable wind all the way. Serious Yachts for Serious Sailors can be found at http://www.dkyachts.com

4.5 Weymouth venue for the 2012 Olympic sailing events
Following the IOC's announcement that London will host the 2012 Olympic's it is confirmed that Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will be the official venue for the sailing events. On June 9, the first phase of the new £7.85m Academy - funded by the South West Regional Development Agency, Sport England, the RYA and a broad partnership of local authorities, charitable trusts and individual donations - was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal, President of the RYA. The state-of-the-art Academy - which includes new pontoons, launching ramps and extensive development of on-shore facilities including a dedicated EIS strength and conditioning gym, tailored to the specific needs of the sport - represents an exciting opportunity for people, including those with disabilities, who have never tried sailing before. Phil Gollop, Director of Operations at WPNSA, said "Bringing the Olympic sailing events to Weymouth and Portland has been our ultimate goal for the past six years. We are absolutely thrilled with the result and can offer some of the best small boat sailing waters in the World, and look forward to welcoming a whole range of Nations in 2012. Check it out at: http://www.wpnsa.org.uk

4.6 LATEEN SAIL Mediterranean Championships
The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) asked the "Circolo Nautico Torres" to arrange "1st Lateen Sail Mediterranean Championship", which will take place on 26-28 August 2005. These unusual triangular sails have sailed the Mediterranean Sea for centuries. The lateen sails are a symbol of hard work, sweat and effort on coastal fishing vessels that have seemed to endlessly work in the Mediterranean Sea. Sardinia is one of the islands in which the passion for lateen sail is still alive. The town of Stintino hosted the first edition of a lateen sail regatta in the early 80s. An event which not reoccurred since then. More at: http://www.velelatine.it/News/2005/CarloforteStintino.html

5. World Speed Records

5.1 Joyon's IDEC obliterates another World Record
Francis Joyon's trimaran IDEC stormed past the The Lizard (SW Cornwall) at 12:44:03 (TU) on 6th July to set a new outright record for a single-handed Transatlantic crossing of 6 days, 4 hrs, 1 min and 37 secs. His average speed for the 2925 mile passage was 19.76 knots. This obliterated the previous solo transatlantic record set back in July 1994 by Laurent Bourgnon and his 60-foot trimaran Primagaz by 22 hrs 33 mins and 5 secs.

On his fourth day at sea, Joyon also set a new 24-hour solo sailing record of 542.7 miles at an average speed of 22.62 knots over 24 hours.

The final stretch of his Atlantic crossing lived up to its reputation of being unequivocally tough and demanding. An opportunity for Francis the record conquering yachtsman from Southern Brittany to show once again his brilliant yacht handling skills and resounding determination. http://www.trimaran-idec.com

5.2 Thomas Coville's Sodebo joins the record breakers with style...
On Friday 8th July, Thomas Coville, and his 60-foot trimaran Sodebo, set a new record for the East to West Atlantic crossing between Cadiz (Spain) and San Salvador (Bahamas). Ratified by the World Sailing Speed Record Council, his time of 10 days, 11 hrs, 50 mins and 20 secs shaves 15 hrs and 27 mins off the existing record held by Francis Joyon and the 92-foot trimaran, IDEC. Sodebo covered the 4614 (essentially downwind) miles at an average speed of 18.3 knots. Feeling the influence of Hurricane Dennis, Coville crossed the finish line in 30-knots of breeze doing 24 knots -- http://www.sodebo-voile.com/

Subject to ratification by the WSSC, Thomas Coville and his 60-foot trimaran Sobedo also went on to set a new solo record between Miami and New York of 3 days, 5 hrs and 20 mins.

This is the first single-handed attempt on this passage, which Coville described as "a really dangerous zone for a solo sailor. I spent what was possibly the finest 3 hours at the helm of Sodebo, making between 28 and 34 knots in total freestyle after two days without sleep" he explained. "It was just intoxicating. Three fabulous hours." Coville will now prepare the boat for an attempt to break the North Atlantic record.

5.3 Olivier de Kersauson's Geronimo blitzes the Round Aussie record...
A momentous occasion as Olivier de Kersauson and the 11 crew of his 112-foot trimaran Geronimo completed "The Challenge" circumnavigation of Australia on Sat 9th July - official time: 17 days, 12 hrs 57 mins 5 secs (averaging 15.44 kts). On the final day of the record run, the boat sailed into the path of weather cell that had 70 knot breezes and a mini tornado which drove them backwards at 20 knots. The boat sustained damage to the steering, causing them to drift towards land at 10 knots.

After taking the sails down the crew repaired the damage and then continued on their way to Sydney -- "This has been a wonderful trip but very challenging. So beautiful but so brutal at the same time. We are used to sailing in this area in the summer, this is the first time in the winter. I have been amazed at how well the Australian crew adapted to the boat and the French team who have known each other for years," commented de Kersauson dockside, after sharing a magnum of Taittinger champagne with Geronimo's crew and shore team. http://www.superyachting.com

5.4 Morning Glory smashes TRANSPAC Record...
Honolulu, Hawaii: Hasso Plattner's Morning Glory, sliding smoothly through a moonlit sea, finished the Centennial Transpacific Yacht Race in moderate winds just after 2 in the morning to smash the record held by his nearest rival, Roy Disney. Although it wasn't a particularly windy Transpac, the maxZ86s proved their slippery power. The German boat's time for the 2,225 nautical miles was 6 days 16 hrs 4 mins 11 secs, lopping almost a day off the record of 7:11:41:27 set by Disney's previous Pyewacket in 1999. The new Pyewacket crossed the Diamond Head finish line almost exactly 2 ½ hours later in what was Disney's 15th and final Transpac. More at: http://www.transpacificyc.org
