The much
talked about tandem mast, bi-plane rig has mainly been used to power up
experimental out and out speed machines. But now, Schionning Designs have
put this simple rig on the Radical Bay 8000
- a production 8m catamaran built right here in South East Asia. This
boat is already turning heads as its proving to be a very easy boat to
sail which produces a sparkling performance – as evidenced by winning
the multihull class at the recent Phuket Kings Cup 2004.

The
Atlantic Oceans are indeed a busy place at the moment as the final acts
of the worlds greatest sailing challenges play out. The leading trio in
the Vendee Globe Vincent Riou (PRB), Jean Le Cam (Bonduelle) and Mike
Goulding (Ecover) after 86 days and over 23000 miles
of racing are now less than 400 miles from the finish in Les Sables.
Only 14.5 miles separates Vincent and Jean who have shared the lead throughout
the race with Mike Golding less than 60 miles behind them. The 13 remaining
competitors are now stretched across the Nth and Sth Atlantic Oceans with
Karen Leibovici (Benefic) beng the last to round Cape Horn two days ago.

racing’s most coveted prize at: www.vendeeglobe.org
Ellen
MacArthur's B&Q has less than 2,000 miles to go and averaged 16.2
kts over 24,869 miles sailed so far, extending her lead to over two days
from Francis Joyon's record time. Recently a collision in the night and
a near collision with a whale is a sharp reminder of how close to disaster
they can be at any point during the remaining miles left on the race course.

Meanwhile
on the Asian scene 4 giant G Class multihulls are preparing to blast off
on Feb 5 from Doha, Qatar chasing $1m prize money in the first ever HSBC-sponsored
global yacht race Oryx Quest 2005
to start and finish in the Arabian Gulf. The 21,000 mile race takes the
fleet down the Indian Ocean into the Southern Ocean and around the five
great capes of Australia, New Zealand, South America and South Africa
before returning to the oil rich state of Qatar at the end of April, in
what will undoubtedly be a new world record time for any circumnavigation.

"Unluckiest sailors of the month"
Two
weeks after Ludde Ingvall's supermaxi Nicorette,
sailed triumphantly into Hobart, taking Line Honours in the 2004 Rolex
Sydney to Hobart race and surviving weather that brought her two big rivals,
Skandia and Konica Minolta undone, her mast broke. During
a corporate sail with Nicorette sponsor clients, the 90 footer only half
a mile seaward of the entrance to the Gold Coast Seaway, sailing under
main and headsail, in a flat seaway and about 10 kts of breeze when suddenly
with a thunderous crack, her mast splintered and broke near the boom gooseneck
and fell cleanly into the water. The mast and sails were latter recovered
in 22 metres of water and the total bill is expected be around AUS$1 million.
The crew and guests returned to the marina and Police confirmed no-one
was injured.
This is the second
time in two years that Nicorette yachts have been dismasted after
surviving the rigours of a Hobart race, only to fall down in mild conditions
and feature in the Unluckiest Sailor awards See Jan
03. - Nicorette will return to Sydney for repairs. Full report at:
http://www.bigboatracing.com/
Another
Skandia sponsored yacht
in trouble...
A cruel reminder of just how much a race of attrition the Vendee is, came
from the Cowes-based Australian Nick Moloney who lost his keel on Skandia
(Ellen MacArthur's old Kingfisher, in which she was runner-up
four years ago). The frightening sound of cracking carbon fibre alerted
Moloney to the problem and he stopped, dropped his sails and loaded water-ballast
to calm the boat's motion. Moloney is 120 miles south-east of Rio de Janeiro,
and the speculation is that the failure stems from high- speed collision
between Skandia and a submerged object last week. - Tim Jeffery,
The Telegraph, http://tinyurl.com/4exyz
Nick
was unharmed, and safe onboard Skandia and initially dealt with
the situation as best he could. “I’m alright, but I’m
gutted and completely devastated. Half of me is just shattered and the
other half of me is very relieved that we’re still upright, and
that this didn’t happen in the south. I’m really really shattered
but I am so focused on just trying to fight back you know. And that’s
my occupation right at the moment, to try and keep this situation under
control".
Moloney was on day
80 of the Vendée Globe with under 5,000 miles left to go on the
solo round the world course. It was his first participation in the race
and it dramatically ends his long-held dream to complete 3 big round the
world sailing goals - of crewed round the world [1997-98 Whitbread on
board Toshiba], fastest non-stop round the world [2002 Jules Verne Trophy
on board Orange] and, finally, his ultimate goal of solo, non-stop around
the world which has now cruelly come to an end. Round the world sailor
Guillermo Altadil, Mini-Transat sailor Yves Niort and Brazilian based
Kiwi Don ‘Jawsie’ Wright were in Rio with a welcome beer and
steak which brought Moloney’s feet back to earth! For more information

3.2 8th QBE Phang Nga Bay Regatta is on...
The regatta will take place as scheduled this Chinese New Year, February
9th – 13th 2005. Being touted as Asia’s most fun sailing event
takes competitors on a journey through some of the world’s most
glorious cruising grounds, sailing amongst beautifully crafted limestone
karsts and enjoying the warm and welcoming nature of the Thai people.
In the wake of the tsunami the committee feels it most important to keep
the regatta on track in an effort to help those affected by this disaster.
The world famous Phi Phi Island suffered major damage and as it's now
in re-build mode will not be a scheduled stop for the regatta as a sign
of respect. However, all proceeds collected by the regatta this year will
be donated to the rebuilding of this magnificent island which has in previous
years played host to the event. See how to make worthy donations and the

ORANGE II HAS CROSSED THE LINE
Bruno Peyron and his crew aboard the maxi-catamaran Orange II are on their
way. They crossed the starting line of the RTW record on Monday January
24 at 11h03’07’’ (10 :03’07’’ GMT).
Conditions were good at the start, with 20 knots blowing from the north
– north east. Orange II was sailing at 20 knots, under reefed mainsail
and staysail.
In
order to beat the absolute RTW record (set by Steve Fossett on April 5,
2004 – 58d 9hrs 32 mn), Orange II must be back on the line at Ouessant
before March 23 at 19:34’52’’ GMT. In order to beat
the Jules Verne Trophy (set by Olivier de Kersauson on April 29, 2004
– 63d 13hrs 59mn), Orange II must be back on the line at Ouessant
before March 29 at 00:01’53’’ GMT.
Bruno Peyron’s
first comments: "We crossed the line in the North of Ouessant, in
order to send some canvas up. The 14 men were up on deck to manoeuvre
but also not to miss anything of the start of this great story. We decided
to anticipate a bit on our departure, according to what we hope to find
in the South Atlantic". Follow the latest craze in high-speed sailing
